Match Report
LARC Div 4 Godzilla vs. Eagle Rock
April 26, 2014

It was a sunny but windy day. Today we had the last match of the season against Eagle Rock (ER) which was leasing Division 4 (9 wins -1 loss). Although we were at 6th place among 7 teams, we still had a good chance to upset ER because we won 2 games at home.

From the beginning, Godzilla played well and the game was neck to neck; however, ’12 ER made a try from a lineout in front of the Godzilla goal line (0-5).

Despite the try gave away, Godzilla kept showing great fighting spirits.

’19 From a penalty committed by ER at 22 m line, #8 Tim “Concrete” Culloton quickly restarted and carried the ball. #9 Satoshi Sugimoto passed the ball to #15 Bozho Deranja from a ruck. Bozho made a beautiful final pass to #11 Myu Hayashi who made a try to the left corner. Godzilla tied the game (5-5). Myu is a freshman at college, Godzilla’s newest import from Japan.

‘22 Godzilla kept attacking. #12 Mike Cesar, an authentic England rugger, ran 60 meters to make a beautiful try to the center. Conversion was successfully made by Bozho (12-5). Godzilla turned around the game. Mike made sharp steps following superb acceleration to his top speed. He also had physical strength to fend off tackles.

ER fought back as well. ’28 From a quick restart from a Godzilla’s penalty, ER forward and backs attacked in unison and made a try. Conversion was made (12-12).

’31 Godzilla immediately fought back. #6 Paul Park caught the ball at a lineout by ER at their 22 m line. He ran 22 meters through the dense defense in front of the goal line and made a try to the center. Conversion was successful. Godzilla turned around the game again (19 – 12). We should eat more Korean BBQ to run strongly like Paul.

’35 Godzilla kept attacking. #11 Israel Fuente, who replaced Myu because of his injury, charged down the ball at Godzilla’s 10 m line and picked it up and ran. #13 Jason Hurrell, the iron man from New Zealand, carried the ball in front of ER’s goal line. #7 Jerry Coronado made a quick ruck to make the ball recycled immediately. #9 Satoshi pass the ball to #15 Bozho Deranja, who caught the ball at his top speed and ran through the defense line. None of ER players couldn’t even touch him. He made a try to the center. Conversion was made (26 -12). Bozho was the former captain of LARC. There were the loudest cheers for Bozho from the spectators at our home pitch.

ER never gave up as well. ’38 An ER forward player jackaled the ball at the ruck formed by Godzilla and quickly passed to ER’s #10 who ran 50 meters and made a try to the center. Conversion was made (26 – 19). ER’s #10 ran well throughout the match.

’40 From the Godzilla’s kick off, ER’s forward and backs attacked together and made a try to the center. Conversion was made (26 – 26). End of first half.

During the first half Godzilla fought head to head with ER which leads Division 4. ER shouldn’t have expected this tough game against Godzilla. There was a good chance for Godzilla to win the game by demonstrating our fighting spirits and skills during the second half

’42 However, Godzilla gave away a try to ER’s backs (26-31). Immediately thereafter another try was conceded to ER’s #10 who ran 50 meters once again.

Godzilla gave away 4 tried last 10 minutes. We needed to change the mood of the game.

’48 #15 Bozho went through the ER’s defense line and passed it to #11 David who ran 20 meters and made a try to the left corner (31 – 36). Godzilla fought back!

However, Godzilla’s good fights lasted only until this point. For the last 20 minutes Godzilla gave away 4 tries (3 conversions) to ER despite the participation by the legend #10 Fernando Ayala. The final score was 31 – 62.

Although we lost the game, we scored five tries, led the game twice and demonstrated our ability and fighting spirits to compete well with the top teams of Division 4. We did well!

Godzilla finished this season with the result of 2 wins and 9 losses. Most of the games we lost were good one with the close scores.

Nearly 60 players wore the LARC Godzilla jersey to participate in Division 4 games. The team was a superb blend of the original Godzilla members, LARC Legend and new players at LARC. The original Godzilla guys enjoyed 15 a side rugby which couldn’t have been played without LARC Legend players because of the lack of players. LARC Legend had great time playing quality rugby at much higher level than regular old boy games. Rookies at LARC had plenty play time with the experienced senior players. Without Div 4 Godzilla, those young players couldn’t have had much play time. We found many talented rookies during our games. LARC Division 4 Godzilla started as an experiment to see how this would work out; however, there is no doubt that the result was a success.

Thank you very much for those who participated in Div 4 Godzilla’s games. I appreciate Chris Gleiter and all LARC members to allow Godzilla to be part of LARC. Our journey will continue. We will aim to win more games at Div 4 next year!
