Match Report January 10, 2015 (12 PM) v. South Orange County Gators @Dodson Middle School

2015.01.13 Tue

Match Report
January 10, 2015 (12 PM)

v. South Orange County Gators
@Dodson Middle School

It is rainy today. It is not common to play rugby here in Southern California under rain; however, some of us at Godzilla used to play rugby on cold and rainy winter days in Japan; therefore, this reminded us of old good memories of winning!
Southern Orange County Gators was runner up in the last season at Division 4. There are some Irish guys in the team and they play wild and tough!

1st half
'1 Godzilla gave away a penalty kick on 22 meter (0-3). Gator is serious about winning this game.
'17 Gators made a scram try from a 5 meter scram. The conversion was successful (0-10). Gators are pushing scram hard for the first 20 minutes of the game.
'22 Gators made a try follow forward play from a line out. Conversion was successful (0-17). Godzilla's tackles are not hard enough.
'26 Tim "Concrete" made a try from scram by a side attack to the center. Finally Godzilla started to fight back. Conversion was made by Yoshi (7-17).
'35 Gator's #12 made a try. He is heavy but fast. Conversion was successful (7-24). We have to tackle low to his knees.

1st half score (Godzilla 7 - Gators 24)

2nd half
'45 David Boyd ran 20 meters and made a final pass to Enrique Schulz over the goal line. A pass was a little bit off but Enrique caught it with his sticky hands and made a try to the left center (12-24).
'48 Once again Gator's #12 made a try after running 40 meters (12-29). We have to stop him to make a good tackles low to his body.
'55 Forward and backs passed balls well. David received a final pass and made a try to the left corner (17-29). This is a great team play efforts by Godzilla! Best try of the day.
'60 David ran again well for 30 meters and made a try to the center. Conversion was made (24-29). We are almost there. We need another try and goal to win the game.
Despite the efforts by Godzilla and dominance of the second half, the time ran out. Gators defended well for the last 20 minutes.

Final Score: Godzilla 24 - Gators 29

It was a great game. We could have won the game if we had had 5 more minutes!

4/26/14 LARC Div 4 Godzilla vs. Eagle Rock

2014.05.08 Thu

Match Report
LARC Div 4 Godzilla vs. Eagle Rock
April 26, 2014

It was a sunny but windy day. Today we had the last match of the season against Eagle Rock (ER) which was leasing Division 4 (9 wins -1 loss). Although we were at 6th place among 7 teams, we still had a good chance to upset ER because we won 2 games at home.

From the beginning, Godzilla played well and the game was neck to neck; however, ’12 ER made a try from a lineout in front of the Godzilla goal line (0-5).

Despite the try gave away, Godzilla kept showing great fighting spirits.

’19 From a penalty committed by ER at 22 m line, #8 Tim “Concrete” Culloton quickly restarted and carried the ball. #9 Satoshi Sugimoto passed the ball to #15 Bozho Deranja from a ruck. Bozho made a beautiful final pass to #11 Myu Hayashi who made a try to the left corner. Godzilla tied the game (5-5). Myu is a freshman at college, Godzilla’s newest import from Japan.

‘22 Godzilla kept attacking. #12 Mike Cesar, an authentic England rugger, ran 60 meters to make a beautiful try to the center. Conversion was successfully made by Bozho (12-5). Godzilla turned around the game. Mike made sharp steps following superb acceleration to his top speed. He also had physical strength to fend off tackles.

ER fought back as well. ’28 From a quick restart from a Godzilla’s penalty, ER forward and backs attacked in unison and made a try. Conversion was made (12-12).

’31 Godzilla immediately fought back. #6 Paul Park caught the ball at a lineout by ER at their 22 m line. He ran 22 meters through the dense defense in front of the goal line and made a try to the center. Conversion was successful. Godzilla turned around the game again (19 – 12). We should eat more Korean BBQ to run strongly like Paul.

’35 Godzilla kept attacking. #11 Israel Fuente, who replaced Myu because of his injury, charged down the ball at Godzilla’s 10 m line and picked it up and ran. #13 Jason Hurrell, the iron man from New Zealand, carried the ball in front of ER’s goal line. #7 Jerry Coronado made a quick ruck to make the ball recycled immediately. #9 Satoshi pass the ball to #15 Bozho Deranja, who caught the ball at his top speed and ran through the defense line. None of ER players couldn’t even touch him. He made a try to the center. Conversion was made (26 -12). Bozho was the former captain of LARC. There were the loudest cheers for Bozho from the spectators at our home pitch.

ER never gave up as well. ’38 An ER forward player jackaled the ball at the ruck formed by Godzilla and quickly passed to ER’s #10 who ran 50 meters and made a try to the center. Conversion was made (26 – 19). ER’s #10 ran well throughout the match.

’40 From the Godzilla’s kick off, ER’s forward and backs attacked together and made a try to the center. Conversion was made (26 – 26). End of first half.

During the first half Godzilla fought head to head with ER which leads Division 4. ER shouldn’t have expected this tough game against Godzilla. There was a good chance for Godzilla to win the game by demonstrating our fighting spirits and skills during the second half

’42 However, Godzilla gave away a try to ER’s backs (26-31). Immediately thereafter another try was conceded to ER’s #10 who ran 50 meters once again.

Godzilla gave away 4 tried last 10 minutes. We needed to change the mood of the game.

’48 #15 Bozho went through the ER’s defense line and passed it to #11 David who ran 20 meters and made a try to the left corner (31 – 36). Godzilla fought back!

However, Godzilla’s good fights lasted only until this point. For the last 20 minutes Godzilla gave away 4 tries (3 conversions) to ER despite the participation by the legend #10 Fernando Ayala. The final score was 31 – 62.

Although we lost the game, we scored five tries, led the game twice and demonstrated our ability and fighting spirits to compete well with the top teams of Division 4. We did well!

Godzilla finished this season with the result of 2 wins and 9 losses. Most of the games we lost were good one with the close scores.

Nearly 60 players wore the LARC Godzilla jersey to participate in Division 4 games. The team was a superb blend of the original Godzilla members, LARC Legend and new players at LARC. The original Godzilla guys enjoyed 15 a side rugby which couldn’t have been played without LARC Legend players because of the lack of players. LARC Legend had great time playing quality rugby at much higher level than regular old boy games. Rookies at LARC had plenty play time with the experienced senior players. Without Div 4 Godzilla, those young players couldn’t have had much play time. We found many talented rookies during our games. LARC Division 4 Godzilla started as an experiment to see how this would work out; however, there is no doubt that the result was a success.

Thank you very much for those who participated in Div 4 Godzilla’s games. I appreciate Chris Gleiter and all LARC members to allow Godzilla to be part of LARC. Our journey will continue. We will aim to win more games at Div 4 next year!

2/22/2014 LA Godzilla vs OC Gators

2014.02.26 Wed

We had another nice day of rugby at our home pitch today. We had U16 and U18 matches before our matches. Both of LARFC youth teams won. LA Godzilla should set tone for LARFC by wining this Div 4 match for D3 and D1 following ours. Our opponent, OC Gators, is at 2nd place in Div 4 at this time (2 win 1 loss).

1st half

3’ OC #8 attached on the scram side and made a try. Conversion was made (0 – 7). OC#8 was a key player and Godzilla needed to stop him.

7’ OC#15 were running strongly and made a try. Conversion was made (0-14). OC#15 was also another key player.

11’ OC made another try. (0-19)

16’ Godzilla conceded a penalty. OC made a PG (0-22).

Godzilla didn’t have a good chance for the first 20 minutes; however, finally at 23 min following big gains made by Godzilla backs, Milo made a great try following quick ball recycle from a ruck. (5-22).

Godzilla needed to turn around the game from this point. However, Godzilla gave up another try before the end of the first half. Conversion was made.

First half was ended LA Godzilla 5 – OC Gators 29.

Godzilla #5 Angel Muro played well for the first half. It was his first rugby game; however, he made good tackles and carried ball few times.

2nd half

43’ Godzilla #15 Bozho ran well by the right side touch line for 20 meters and made an excellent last pass to #8 Tim (Concrete) at 22 meter line. Tim made a try by escaping from a tackler. (10 – 29)

This was a great try to change the atmosphere of the game in favor of Godzilla.

However, it was not the case. Godzilla couldn't stop strong and consistent attacks by OC Gators thereafter. Godzilla conceded two tries right after (46‘ & 50’). A conversion was made. (10 – 41)

Godzilla attacked and defended well for the next 15 minutes. Godzilla #11 Chris Highland made good gains several times and also made a good tackle from far distance. This was also his first rugby match.

’66 Godzilla conceded another try. (10 – 46). Thereafter, Godzilla’s stamina ran out and Godzilla defense couldn't stop OC Gators. For the last 15 minutes Godzilla conceded 4 tries and 2 conversions.

The final score was LA Godzilla 10 – OC Gators 70.

Godzilla were not able to tackle down two key players of OC Gators (#8 and #15). We need to focus on our defense for the rest of the season.

2/8/2014 LA vs Rebellion

2014.02.10 Mon

Today we had a match in Burbank against LA Rebellion which is a gay friendly team derived from a gay bar (Rebellion). It was a nice day (70F/20C) with clear sky. D1/D3 teams had matches in Belmont Shore. We have very limited supports today from D3 team. We only had 5 reserves to start with.

The game was kicked off on time at 1 PM.

0 minutes: Rebellion kicked off and Junzo catched it and made a good ball out to backs.

3 minutes: Following a scram awarded by our knock-on at 22m in Godzilla territory, Rebellion’s fly half made a try easily in the center by avoiding tackles. Conversion was made (0-7).

7 minutes: Following the center scram by kick-off off-side committed by Godzilla, #11 of Rebellion made a try. Conversion was made as well (0-14). Godzilla gave away two tries and conversions too easily.

17 minutes: Chris (#14) had a pass from Bozho (#15) and ran 20 meters in front of the goal where he was tackled. Forward quickly recycled the ball and Paul (#7) made a try. Milo (#13) made a conversion from 45 degree angle (7-14).

28 minutes: Bozho (#15) ran 20 meters and made a try to the center. Milo (#13) made a conversion easily (14-14). We tied! Yeah!

38 minutes: Rebellion made a try and a conversion (14-21).
40 minutes: LA Godzilla 14 - Rebellion 21

Today Godzilla’s scrams and line-outs were excellent. Tim took many of the opponents line out. Forward supplied balls well in the racks. Backs ran well. For the 1st half it was very close game. It was pity for us that we didn’t score from 5 meter penalties twice.

We were hoping that we made another turn around in the 2nd half like last week.

2nd half
There have been no score for both sides during the first 19 minutes in the 2nd half.

Godzilla started to lose players due to injuries. Dan, Ted, Satoshi and Myu were out for injuries.

59 minutes: Rebellion made a try (14-26).

Thereafter, Godzilla’s players ran out of stamina and concentration. Rebellion made 3 tries and 2 conversions during the last 20 minutes of the 2nd half. The final score was (14-55).

Justin Rodriquez (Div 3) played much better than the last week. He made one good tackle, carried ball and recycled it a few times.

Until 60 minutes, Godzilla had a good game against Rebellion. We need to have more stamina and reserve members for the last 20 minutes of the game. We exhausted all reserves in the latter half of 2nd half. Hiro Tsukuda was not supposed to play but he went in during the last 10 minutes.

We will get revenge against Rebellion at home in April.
